As mentioned in several previous posts, I’ve been planning to do some more vlogging and videos, and I’ve wanted to get a small and unobtrusive camera for that purpose. I’ve been trying out several options, and so I used a christmas gift voucher haul to splash out on a new one. I settled on the Canon G7X Mark II. It’s a small, 1inch sensor compact camera, that does good video, and it has a flip over screen for self monitoring.

Sony was the first to produce this style of compact camera with the RX100 series, and I have actually tried that too, but I ended up going for the Canon rather than the Sony version. The main reason is that the current Sony version (RX100 Mark V) is over twice the price, and while it has some nice features like sLog and 4k, it’s more than I need right now. I could have gotten an older Sony, but the older non-4k models which are in the price range, only do 50i (or 50p) and not 25p and it’s actually kind of a pain to deal with, whereas the Canon does 25p which is perfect. And has built in time-lapse!

It’s actually a lot better than I was expecting for such a small camera, both in terms of video and stills. I haven’t had a chance to test it fully yet though, as I’ve been pretty sick over the last week with a horrible respiratory illness that seems to be doing the rounds here in Ireland at the moment, but with the little bit of testing that I did do, I was impressed.

The first little video I got to make, I recorded while travelling on the local tram here in Dublin. It was a spur of the moment kind of shoot, but it’s also the kind of “vloggy” (my made up word of the day) type thing that I want it for. It’s great being so small, because no one really pays any attention to you when using it. I know its a pretty silly little video, but it’s the thing that I like doing - making something out of nothing. Anyway, this was all shot fully auto with little or no input from me.

I also used it for the product shots of the recent bag review here on the my blog. I need to spend more time with it, and I need to get some more testing done before I give a full evaluation of it, but I’m really happy with it so far. I’ll have more to come on this, and hopefully some more videos in the future too.
