iPhone 6 Plus Camera first Impressions
I recently upgraded my phone to an iPhone 6 plus (from an iPhone 5) and I was curious to see what the camera was like, especially with Apple's recent publicity on the matter. I was out in the city today for a little while so I decided to try it out. I didn't spend too much time with it, so I don't really have any major opinions as to the quality yet, but instead here are some images that I shot, and some observations on using it.
Here are some random thoughts on my first day using it. These are just quick thoughts. I'll post a proper review at some point.
- The big screen is great for framing and taking images. I wish there was a proper camera with a screen like this (although that would probably be a bit large)
- It's very fast. Operations are very speedy, switching between apps is fast and using apps such as VSCO is fast. I found the process of editing on the phone much quicker than on the iPhone 5. Again the big screen really helps here too.
- Taking pictures for any length of time kills the battery. It's less than on my iPhone 5 but it's still an issue. If you plan to go out shooting with your phone and editing, you want to make sure you have some kind of power supply with you.
- Image quality is pretty good. It's definitely improved over the iPhone 5 (I had the 5, not the iPhone 5 plus) but in my opinion, despite what people say, there's still a long way to go before it gets to DSLR or even mirrorless quality. Having said that, it's still pretty good.
- Getting images off it is still a bit of a pain until Apple releases photos finally. I imported images into Lightroom by connecting the phone up directly, but anything that I took in the camera app with any of the filters (even in black and white) looses those settings because it's applied as metadata (much like raw). I could go via iPhoto or Aperture, but that's a lot of jumping around.
- I shot some videos using the Filmic Pro app, but for some reason they came out very noisy (much noisier than on my iPhone 5) but there could be some weird settings left over from having restored from the backup of my old phone.
- It takes really good black and white images.
- Slow motion videos are great, but quality is quite low. Unless I'm doing something wrong. Which is not beyond the realms of possibility.
- I cheated a bit with some of these. I brought them into Lightroom and cleaned them up with a little noise reduction and a little grain to take the digital edge off so to speak.
That's about it for now. Here are some of the images I took. These are nothing too fancy, as I was just trying it out really. I'm going to try a full morning shooting street photography with it and see how I get on.
