Street Photo Diary: Searching for Colour with the Fuji X-Pro2

I set myself a little project the other morning, and that was to venture around the streets of Dublin city looking for interesting colours I could see. It’s become something of a running gag now, that my “Street Photography” isn’t technically street photography. But then, the definition of street photography is so vague anyway, at this point it doesn’t really matter. It was an interesting exercise, and it was quite revealing to me.

I recorded the journey as part of my ongoing YouTube “Street Photo Diary” series, which you can find embedded below. One of the things that I noticed is that setting yourself a goal like this really focuses your mind. You ignore distractions and by having something to really think about you see more clearly. On the subject of seeing clearly, I also fund that it helps you “see” better in general. You can visualise the types of shot that you want before you take it.

I have always had weird tastes when it comes to photography. I like abstract shapes and colours, and I like interesting objects and textures too. Sometimes people don’t get this, and sometimes they like to complain in comments. I’m a firm believer in shooting what you want. As someone who has worked in design, I appreciate such things. I also like abstract ideas and I’ll take an image if its appeal is even just that it has nice bokeh. I don’t know though, maybe I’m just weird?

Below is a section of images from the shoot. I shot this with the X-Pro 2 because I figured, while searching for colour, you might as well use the camera best known for its colour. Having said that the battery died towards the end of the shoot and I didn’t have a spare, so I had to shoot some additional shots with my G7X. They’re all mixed in here, so can you tell which is which without looking at the Exif? (no cheating)
