Street Photography Diary No. 12
It's February already, and it's time for another edition of Street Photography Diary! If you're new to the site, this on-going series is basically a random collection of my recent street photography, accompanied by an equally random collection of thoughts on the images, the process, or sometimes on subjects only loosely related!
There's a lot going on in the city of Dublin at the moment. Between the arrival of spring, the on-going tram construction and the looming election, the city streets have been somewhat chaotic. Chaotic is sometimes good for photography though.
As spring has arrived, the light is slowly changing. Already the days are getting a bit longer, and the morning light is getting stronger. You can feel the change in the air, and see it all around. Daffodils are starting to get their flowers, and the plumb blossoms are beginning to bloom. People seem to be feeling it too. You get a sense of change in the air. We've had such a bleak and wet winter here in Ireland this year, and spring has brought some drier (albeit colder) weather and you can really feel the change in the mood on the streets.
It's election season here in Ireland too, which means that the place is covered with election posters. I'm not sure how it is in other countries during elections, but here, every lamp post or free standing poll gets covered in a large picture of some politician's face, with some tag line or party statement. And when I say covered, I mean covered! Sometimes it feels like you're walking through tunnels of election posters. Fortunately the election campaign is only for three weeks, so they'll be gone pretty quickly.
I had written in the last diary post that I was feeling a degree of creative block, and it's still with me to an extent. I guess it's the photographer's equivalent of writer's block. Mind you, I have that too. I've been trying to shake things up by looking for different places and walking different areas of the city for inspiration. The change in season's is helping too.
Gear wise, as usual, these are taken with a collection of various cameras. I have a tendency to take different cameras and lenses with me, depending on the mood I'm in, or what I want to achieve! For this collection, it's mainly my Nikon D700 with either the 35mm or 50mm lens. I'm using a DX lens on an FX body, which sort of works. I have a post about how I get around some of the limitations if you're interested. The rest are shot with the Sony A6000 and the 18-55 kit lens. I had brought the lens with me for flexibility, although it's a pretty awful lens, but it fills a hole in my lineup till I can get a better one (not that any of Sony's other APS-C zooms are much better)
