Comments System Updated

Comments System Updated

Just a quick site update: I’ve changed the comments system on the blog from the default Squarespace one to Disqus. There are a few reasons for doing this, both for my convenience and for the readers.

First of all, the advantages for the reader is that it is a unified system, with multiple ways to log in, and you can see your comments across multiple blogs if you so choose. You can log in using any social account or if you have a disqus account. It also means that I can start discussions independent of the blog, and it should be easier to keep up with discussions, especially if you’re signed up to Disqus.

For me this was a necessary change for a number of reasons. The most important of which is that it’s much easier to moderate. I can now manage the comments on multiple sites from one place. It also has better moderation tools, some import ones of which are lacking from the default Squarespace tools.

I know some people don’t like Disqus, but for my purposes, I have to go with it. The one big downside is that switching over to Disqus hides the old comments. So, if you’re wondering where your comment suddenly went, I didn’t delete any, they’ve just been hidden, because the new system takes over, and unfortunately there does’t seem to be a way to move existing comments over.

Comment Policy

Speaking of comments, I try to keep this site as friendly as possible. I do my best to moderate the comments, and I have a zero tolerance policy for any kind of uncivil posting. I’m lucky in that the majority of the comments posted here are civil, and I’m all for open discussions, but sometimes however, as with all things on the internet, a small few people can only get their point across by being mean, rude or hurtful. I have a comment policy in place here, which I’m sure some may not like, but it’s there for both my sake and the sake of other readers.
