Canon Eos RP Raw files Are Impressive In Capture One (Compared to Lightroom)

Every now and then I like to download camera samples from DP Review to see how various cameras look, and how they perform in different software. (Because I’m a bit of a nerd for such things). I was recently having a look at raw files from the Canon Eos RP and I was looking at them in Lightroom and I though, these are kind of “meh”. Then I opened them in Capture One, and the difference was night and day. It was so significant that I though to myself, “what’s going on here?”

Part of the problem is that for some inexplicable reason, Adobe does not supply camera matching profiles with Lightroom for the Eos RP. Apparently they haven’t for several recent cameras. As a result you’re left using the “Adobe Colour” profile, and the results are kind of washed out and lacking in contrast in comparison. They’re also brighter than they should be for some reason. This has led some users to try hacking the camera matching profiles from an Eos 6D to make them work for the Eos RP in Lightroom.

Before you take up arms and start commenting about the lack of comparisons or samples to “prove my case” in this article, the sample photos I was using are copyright and I don’t ave the rights to use them. While this doesn’t bother some bloggers, as a photographer myself, I do my best to respect copyright. So, if you want to see the results, you can try this yourself. If you Have an Eos RP and don’t have Capture One, download the trial version and check it out.

I can’t help but wonder if a lot of the negative criticism of this camera was because people were looking at RAW files converted with either Lightroom or Camera Raw. If you open the same files in Capture One, there is much better contrast and colour. Flesh-tones are rich and colours are vibrant. But more than that, detail seems to be more defined and noise is less. This isn’t the first time I’ve seen this either. Some Sony cameras show the same difference. I’ve written a lot about the advantages of Capture One for Fuji Shooters, but if you use a different camera, its worth checking out the results for it too, especially if it is a recent one.

|f you have an Eos RP, you really should try this yourself. You can download a trial version of Capture One and see the differences, and I think you’ll be surprised.

(If anyone reading this does have an Eos RP and they wouldn’t mind sending me RAW files I can actually use for this article I would be very grateful)
