The One Lens I wish Fuji Would Make

The One Lens I wish Fuji Would Make

While Fuji no doubt has a great range of lenses, and it certainly has some high-quality Primes, there are a couple of holes in its lineup still, in my opinion. There is one lens, that is very popular on some other systems, and it’s the lens I miss the most from when I had it for my Canon 5d. For me, it’s the ideal walk around focal length, and that is a 24-105mm equivalent. For a Fuji X-series system, that would be a 16-70mm.

Fuji does have a number of zooms which are close to this range, but not quite there. There is the 16-55mm f/2.8 which, while I have ever used, is basically a 24-82mm equivalent on full frame. While this is pretty good, and probably fine for many users, I really liked the longer reach of the 105mm equivalent on full frame, which would be 70mm on APS-C. For travel and street photography it was an ideal range for me. There’s also the 18-135mm which more than covers the range on the telephoto end, but it lacks the equivalent of a 24mm on the wide end.

I find that for my tastes, I prefer a 24mm equivalent on the wide end of a lens rather than a 28mm equivalent (which is what 18mm is on a Fuji or other cropped sensor lens.) In terms of aperture range, I would like to see such a lens with a constant aperture of f/2.8, which would have the depth of field of a f/4.2 (near enough to F/4) on a full frame lens, but this would probably be very expensive. So a constant F/4 would be good enough.

Such a lens does actually exist, just not for Fujifilm. Sony makes it for it’s APS-C E-mount although it is expensive, and hard to get (it’s frequently not in stock in local suppliers here in Ireland). I would love to see something similar for Fuji though.

This is obviously just my opinion of course, so a quick disclaimer: I’m not saying that Fuji “needs” to make this lens or anything. I’m just pointing out that this is something that I personally would love to see.

Here are a few other lenses I’d love to see:

  • A cheaper 16mm (possibly part of the f/2 lineup)
  • A replacement for the current 18-55 f/2.8 -f/4 kit lens. Making it 16-55 instead (for the reasons stated above)
  • 35mm 1.2 or f/1.0 (yes, I know - this is unlikely, but one can dream!) which would be closer to a f/1.4 full frame equivalent. Even a second generation of the existing lens with faster focus and less aberration wide open.

What about you? What lenses would you like to see for the Fuji system? Leave a comment below.
